Student, Education, and Consumer Groups Defend CFPB To Congress

On February 13, nearly 60 local, state and national student advocacy, professional, consumer, educational, faith and other organizations sent a letter to Congressional leaders expressing "strong support for the crucial work the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) does on behalf of student loan borrowers." The "borrower-focused" letter also urged Congress "to ensure the agency remains well-positioned to solve borrowers’ problems, which includes protecting the Bureau’s single-Director structure and its independent funding, and maintaining Director Richard Cordray until his term ends." (Letter below and attached as pdf).

This is the seventh in a series of reports that review complaints to the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. In this report, we explore consumer complaints about predatory loans, categorized in the database as payday loans, installment loans, and auto title loans.

Letter: Protecting the FTC from Special Interest Attacks

While much of our work has been in defense of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB), we also support the efforts of the over-100 year old Federal Trade Commission. Recently, powerful special interests convinced the Energy and Commerce Committee to draft (and expect it to vote out soon, likely next week) legislation to severely weaken the FTC's ability to protect the public from identity theft and privacy invasions (including sloppy data security that leads to identity theft), deceptive health marketing claims by sellers of various dangerous or ineffective (or both) products and numerous other last-dollar and other frauds and schemes. We've joined over 30 leading groups in a letter opposing the so-called FTC Process and Transparency Reform Act of 2016 (HR 5510-Burgess (TX)).

HIGHWAY BOONDOGGLES II

America is currently in a transportation infrastructure-funding crisis. While our roads, bridges, and transit systems fall into disrepair, demand for public transportation, as well as safe bicycle and pedestrian routes, has increased. America’s long-term transportation behavior is changing, especially among Millennials, America’s largest generation. Nevertheless, states continue to spend billions each year on new and wider highways. This is a failed approach - one that relies on tomorrow’s money to pay for yesterday’s policies, rather than working to build the 21st Century transportation system we need.
